4 Tips for Improving Your Hiring Process

The hiring process can be the achilles heel of your department and you may not even know it. The first question that needs to be asked is “Do my recruiters have a process?”. In most cases, unfortunately the answer is either “I don’t know” or worse, simply no. You cannot improve what does not exist. Before you make an attempt to fix the process, you need to understand what it is for your organization.

  1. Be a Prospect
Take the time to go through what a prospect experiences when dealing with your company. Fill out a short form, make a phone call, fill out a full application. See what happens with each of your recruiters. How much time does it take? Is your organization responsive? Is it somewhere that you would be excited to work? All these questions will help in deciding what needs to be changed to provide the prospect with the best experience possible.

  2. Develop Sales Skills
Too often, in Driver Recruiting, sales skills are a “nice to have” rather than a “must have.” Unlike an HR department, Recruiting is all about sales. The elite Recruiters understand this and use it to their advantage. Prospects are interviewing you and your company to decide if it is a fit. The best way to proceed is to understand the sales process and how your recruiters can leverage it to become more effective.

  3. Measure What Moves the Needle
In any process, measurement is crucial to success. The challenge is measuring what matters. It is important that you understand this and are looking at the items that improve your hiring process rather than collecting data for data’s sake. The most effective measurements are those that gauge your interaction and effectiveness with the prospect. It is important that you understand these numbers by recruiter. They include; lead to hire ratio, time to contact, time to hire, no show rate, as well as hires per week and month.

  4. Eliminate Pointless Paperwork
Please understand this is not saying to eliminate all documentation. Look at what you truly need in the process and at what time it is needed. Today’s prospects are savvy, they are also shopping for the best opportunity for their lifestyle. This means that they are much less likely to fill out a lot of paperwork before they know they are interested in the position.

Your success is dependent on having a hiring process that works. Be sure that you are set up to be the most successful you can be.
